Peace of Mind in Advance: Why I Built a Just in Case Binder
The moment I received a call that my MRI revealed the cause of the symptoms I had been battling, my world froze. The following hours and days felt like an eternity as my diagnosis and treatment plan came into focus. I knew this medical challenge would disrupt more than just my daily life. It would impact my family, my coworkers, and my clients.
I began to panic, knowing how many critical pieces of information lived only in my brain. I was the file cabinet for everything. If something happened to me, everyone I loved would unfairly be left to piece it all back together. I refused to add that burden to the people who mattered most to me.
So I went into hyper nesting mode, far more thorough than anything I experienced when I was pregnant. This time was different. I approached the organizing as if I might not be coming back, and without having a name for it yet, I was building what's often called a just in case binder: one calm, complete home for every detail my family would need.
I began creating:
Lists of contacts, login information, and important dates for my children's doctors, schools, and extracurricular activities
Detailed spreadsheets with all the relevant information for my clients
Documentation of every financial obligation and investment I had
Step by step notes teaching my family how to handle the household chores I had always taken care of
Once I had documented and organized as much as I possibly could, I hired a service to deep clean the house in the days before my surgery.
Everything was done in anticipation of a worst case scenario.
I was fortunate to have a few weeks to pull it all together, but I quickly realized that many people never get that kind of runway. We often put off things like life insurance, a will, or a family emergency binder, telling ourselves we have more time. As much as we pray for a long life, none of us have a guaranteed timeline.
For your own peace of mind, and as a gift to the people you love, it is essential to plan and organize while you are healthy. In the event of a sudden illness or accident, your family will be grateful for the effort you made now, so they can focus on loving you rather than playing detective to rebuild your mental file cabinet.
This is why I created a simple, easy to use digital download for anyone ready to organize their own mental file cabinet, before they ever need to. The goal is to give you peace of mind and a sense of calm, so that even in an emergency, nothing important gets lost.
THE JUST IN CASE COMPANION is a calm, guided way to put your family's most important information in one place.
Most of us carry the important details of our lives in our heads. Doctors' names. Account numbers. Where the will is kept. Who to call first. It works, until a moment comes when someone else needs that information and you are not able to hand it over yourself.
This companion exists so that moment never has to be a scramble. Twenty pages, six gentle sections, one place for everything that matters: people to call, health and care, money and legal, digital and home, family logistics, and final wishes and words.
This is not a 100-page overwhelm binder. It is designed to be finished, not just started.
