The power of now
An hourglass is a device that dates back to the 14th century and is used to measure time. Two clear vessels of equal size are connected by a narrow passage. It contains sand, which slowly passes from the upper to the lower over a calibrated frame of time.
Watching the sand slowly pass can be mesmerizing. It can also be stressful depending on the situation being timed!
When someone receives a difficult medical diagnosis, it can feel like being handed an hourglass. Watching time slip away grain by grain. It’s a painful visual that brings a heavy awareness. But if we pause and truly reflect, we realize that none of us are ever guaranteed the full time given in that hourglass.
Somehow, that truth brings clarity.
It reminds us that life is happening now.
The prognosis may be uncertain, but so is tomorrow… for all of us. Rather than seeing this as something to fear, let it be an invitation to fully live. Allow yourself to be mesmerized and thankful for each moment… each grain of sand.
Embrace each moment as a gift. Hold your loved ones close. Speak with kindness. Smile often. Let your positivity touch the lives of others so that, one day, you’re remembered not for the challenges you faced, but for the love, warmth, and presence you brought into the world.
